Princess Cruises Honors Soldiers During Veteran’s Day

November 12, 2012

Veteran’s Day honors those who have risked their lives to better our nation, and one cruise line is showing its support to our country’s heroes starting all the way at the top. The president and CEO of Princess Cruises, Alan Buckelew, is a Vietnam veteran himself and has shared his story with fans of the cruise line on the company’s blog “50 Essential Experiences: The Travel Bucket List”.

“I served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from June 1969 until June 1970,” explains Buckelew in his blog. “I was part of a recon platoon called Fox Force. We operated in the Central Highlands of Vietnam – in the mountains and jungles of that area.”

Princess currently offers a year-round Special Military Onboard Credit Program for veterans sailing on the line and also offered discount prices on itineraries in honor of Veterans Day. Now, in honor of Veteran’s Day, the cruise line is also offering support to soldiers through non-profit efforts. The company announced an unprecedented cruise in support of U.S. veterans, which is expected to raise $1 million for two U.S. veteran non-profit groups: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) and Operation Homefront.

Buckelew himself will be onboard the Caribbean Princess, hosting the cruise from Nov. 5-9, 2013 sailing from Galveston to the Western Caribbean.

“We all know someone – a family member, a neighbor, a friend, perhaps ourselves – who has served,” said Buckelew in a statement. “As a veteran myself, I know that America’s warriors face immeasurable challenges both during active duty and when they return home. I look forward to meeting many of our passengers on board to help us raise much-needed funds to assist our veterans.”

The four-day cruise, which will call in Progreso, Mexico, is expected to raise over $1 million for the organizations. Half of the funds will be raised by taking a portion of each passenger’s cruise fare and the other half will be matched by Princess Cruises.

Passengers will be able to enjoy special programs and activities designed to honor those who have and who are currently serving our country. Guest lecturers, special topic panels, a Stars and Stripes Sailaway, service branch get-togethers, a film festival, and several other programs will be held throughout the duration of the veteran’s cruise.

Moreover, the cruise line has also launched a new “Cruising for a Cause” initiative, through which Princess will dedicate entire sailings to support charitable causes and will provide passengers with a way to make a difference in the lives of those in need with each vacation.
