Princess Cruises Passenger Dies After Becoming Ill Onboard

December 5, 2012

Each cruise accident lawyer at our firm has represented many passengers who have become ill during their vacations, injured or who have even been the victims of a crime. Sometimes, these incidents occur due to someone’s direct negligence or wrongdoing, and when they are, victims may be eligible to receive compensation for their pain and suffering.

Recently, a passenger onboard a Princess Cruises ship became ill and was listed in critical condition before being pronounced dead at an area hospital. The passenger, an elderly Asian man, was sailing onboard the Dawn Princess yesterday while the vessel called on the Bay of Islands. He became ill, though authorities have not released the specifics of his condition, and had to be airlifted off the vessel.

The Northland Electricity rescue helicopter was called to Waitangi around 7:30 a.m. on Monday and flew the man and his wife to Whangarei Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition. According to Northland Emergency Services trust pilot Pete Turnbull, doctors found the victim unconscious onboard the ship.

Turnbull also explained that around 60 cruise ships enter the Bay of Islands each year, and the Northland Electricity rescue helicopter has made at least three or four trips to cruise vessels to help victims who have become ill.

Dawn Princess crewmembers tried to ventilate the man while waiting for emergency services to arrive, but the man died at the hospital Tuesday morning. The cruise ship was expected to dock in Tauranga at 5:45 a.m. today. The name of the victim has not been released.

Princess Cruises authorities have not specified whether the man had a preexisting condition or if he suddenly became ill. If he was injured onboard the Dawn Princess due to unfavorable conditions onboard the vessel, the victim’s wife may be able to file a lawsuit against the cruise line. In addition, if an investigation finds that the vessel’s crewmembers did not put forth maximum effort to help the victim, Princess may also be found liable. It appears as though crewmembers did everything they could to help the passenger, but there are times in which cruise operators do not provide sufficient care to those who are hurt or sick. This happens more often than anyone can possibly imagine, but our cruise accident lawyers know all too well that negligence is a main factor in many incidents at sea.

Anyone who has ever been hurt or suffered an illness onboard a cruise ship is entitled to seek legal help, regardless of the extent of their injuries. Victims and their loved ones may be entitled to receive money damages and reimbursement for medical costs, and at Lipcon, Margulies, Alsina & Winkleman, P.A., that is precisely what we aim to accomplish. If you or someone you know was involved in an accident or injury at sea, schedule a consultation with one of our experienced attorneys to determine your options in filing a claim.
