This week, an 18-year-old woman reported having suffered a sexual assaulted aboard the Carnival Elation. According to reports, the woman notified security on the ship of the event as soon as the incident took place, on the evening of Tuesday, February 27th. Because the ship was just 12 miles off the U.S. coast at the time of the incident, the cruise line notified the FBI and detained the alleged perpetrator until returning to port in Jacksonville, Florida. Investigations are underway.
The mother of the woman explained to reporters that her daughter has special needs, and expressed her concerns regarding protecting her from situations such as this. However, it is challenging and almost impossible to ensure that the people you interact with on a cruise have good intentions. Moreover, while most people are truly there to relax, others may have motives that are less innocent.
Unfortunately, rape and sexual assault continue to be the most commonly reported crimes at sea. One of the reasons for this may be because cruise-goers often forget that anyone can take a cruise, and, as a result, it is important to be just as vigilant about personal safety on a cruise as is it in everyday life. The truth of the matter is that a traumatic experience like this can happen when you least expect it, so it is important to remain vigilant for yourself and for all of your traveling companions.
Additionally, should a rape or sexual assault occur at sea, it is essential for you to report the crime as soon as possible. Although it can be intimidating to speak to security, and emotionally exhausting to bring up memories of the experience, it will ultimately provide you with a stronger legal case in the future, if you take the step to report the crime when it occurs.
