Nassau, Bahamas Feb 5, 2013: Disney Dream, new cruise ship.

One of the most important factors to consider when booking a cruise, is whether your safety will be a priority, if unexpected events leave you in a position that requires medical assistance. Most of the time, the answer is yes. These days, trained medical personnel are always on hand to assist you, should you believe you are coming down with a cold, or experience another minor injury or illness.

While no one wants to fall ill while away, it can be helpful to know that these needs can be met by cruise line staff. However, there are occasions when medical cases simply cannot be properly tended to while at sea. Often, these are larger issues that, after an examination by the ship doctor, are sent elsewhere for treatment.

Although it may seem like a hassle to be sent back to land, this is always for the patient’s best interest. We promise that a day spent receiving proper treatment is much better than a week spent in a downward spiral aboard your cruise ship!

Just a few weeks ago, we reported the tragic incident of the 8-year-old boy who had to be airlifted from his cruise ship after incurring an injury in the pool. Today, we are saddened to report that another child has required similar attention.

On July 28, 2016, a 6-year-old boy was medically airlifted from his cruise ship, the Disney Dream. According to the US Coast Guard, the boy was suffering from abdominal pain. At the time of this post, he is awaiting emergency medical services at the Lake Worth, Florida station.

After the fatal event a few weeks before, we are relieved to hear that, this time, the patient will hopefully make a full recovery. However, we cannot forget that some are not so lucky. And while it does not sound as though the cruise line improperly handled this situation in any way, we will keep our ear to the ground as more details of this story unfold.
