When you depart on your cruise vacation, the last thing you want to think about is the possibility of an accident or injury. After all, once you are on a cruise, you will be far from your doctors and other medical professionals who know your history. Add to that the fact that the medical facilities on even the most modern cruise ships are still very different from what a mayor U.S. shore based hospital can offer and it is understandable how the thought of a serious accident or injury on a cruise ship causes stress for even the most calm and collected individuals.
Nonetheless, the unfortunate reality is that countless individuals–both passengers and crewmembers alike–fall victim to serious accidents and injuries while on cruises. Therefore, it is important to be sure that your health is in good standing, before scheduling a departure date.
A recent story out of Alabama reminds us of this.
Heart Attack Symptoms Prompted an Airlift to Shore
According to reports received last week, a 66-year-old male passenger medevacked from the Carnival Fantasy, after the ship’s medical personnel alerted the Coast Guard that the passenger in question expressed heart attack symptoms. At the time, the ship was roughly 170 nautical miles south of Mobile, Alabama. Together with a ship’s nurse, the man landed at the University Medical Center in New Orleans.
In the wake of this event, we are grateful to know that the line followed proper medevac procedures this time. However, we cannot help but wonder if the man had any indication of heart trouble before departing on his vacation? While we understand the desire to get away and relax for a few days, this is a prime example of how an underlying health concern can take what should be a restful and restorative time, and transform it into a chaotic and uncertain one instead.
Check With Your Doctor Before You Depart
We understand that it is often difficult to determine for yourself whether you are in good health before leaving on vacation. As a result, we recommend all passengers with the potential for serious health issues to check with their doctor beforehand. Of course, even with the best preparation, incidents can occur when you least expect them.
