Just this week an 87-year-old woman required medevac assistance at sea. According to reports, a woman who was sailing aboard the Viking Sky, fell and injured her hip while the ship was 250 miles northeast of the Norfolk, VA coast. Medical professionals aboard the cruise contacted the nearest Coast Guard, which launched a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules airplane and a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter for the rescue. The woman and her husband were airlifted from the ship and taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. There is no further information on the woman’s condition at this time.
With so much to look forward to on a cruise vacation, you can imagine how disappointing it would then be to become the victim of an accident or injury that prevents you from enjoying the rest of your trip. No matter the severity of the incident, it can leave you feeling like you missed out on what should have been a wonderful time away. Unfortunately, this kind of scenario happens more often than anyone would like.
Were the Cruise Conditions Safe?
In the wake of this event, we are glad to know that the Coast Guard was able to successfully bring this woman to the care that she required. These kind of operations have multiple opportunities to go wrong. So a smooth and successful completion is something for which to be grateful.
However, we are also left wondering what could have caused this woman to fall aboard the cruise? The truth of the matter is that not all cruises are suitably prepared to accommodate all passengers. The potential for uneven or slippery flooring is certainly a danger for a passenger who may have more difficulty avoiding those things to maintain sure footing.
Although we do not know the details, we hope that the cruise line has taken the necessary measures to ensure that their vessels are safe and navigable for all passengers. Far too often, we see situations of accident and injury that could have been prevented, if the cruise line had taken more care in planning and preparation.
