Jacksonville Main Street Bridge 3Typically, when we think about cruises, we imagine the kind out on the open seas. These gigantic vessels do get most of the attention, thanks to their size and often-luxurious accommodations. However, river cruises are another popular cruise option and there too things can go wrong.

Although the ocean does have a certain allure, there are many great rivers, both in this country, and abroad, that offer a different perspective on the landscape and culture of a certain region. Because of this, river cruises are an equally viable way to see the world.

A great alternative to a longer, more intensive ocean voyage, a river cruise may give you just the taste of discovery and exploration that you have been craving. However, it is important to remember that even these cruises still holds the potential for danger.

A recent story out of Jacksonville, Florida reminds us of this.

On November 25th, 2016, a river cruise found itself lodged underneath the Main Street Bridge. The ship, the American Star, had departed from St. Augustine earlier that morning, and crashed into the bridge at around 4.45 pm.

The vessel tracking system revealed that the ship had passed under the bridge before, while it was lifted. However, while the ship was attempting to dock on the North Bank, the current forced the vessel backwards and under the bridge, where it became stuck.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash. At this time, however, many believe it may have been due to bow thruster failure.

The lowering tide eventually allowed the ship to break free from the bridge more than three hours later, causing some damage to the bridge in the process.
