Three people were killed and 13 others are currently missing following a boating accident near French territory. The vessel was transporting illegal immigrants and capsized in the Indian Ocean off the French overseas territory of Mayotte. Authorities confirm that eight passengers survived.
The vessel had departed from the Comoran island of Anjouan, located roughly 60 miles from Mayotte, and capsized about 300 meters (985 feet) off the coast. Investigators are still searching for more potential boat accident survivors.
This maritime accident is just one of several that have occurred in the past few months. According to authorities, these types of incidents are common in the area. A similar accident took place on September 8. A shipwreck left six dead and 27 others missing. Another boat accident in July left seven people dead and four missing.
The immigrants were likely trying to find employment or were seeking medical care in Mayotte. Several Comorans take to the seas aboard unsafe fishing boats and risk their lives to make it to Mayotte. Sadly, many end up seriously wounded or are killed in the attempt, such as the immigrants who attempted this voyage. Authorities say that roughly two-fifths of Mayotte’s 200,000 residents are likely illegal immigrants.
Whether illegal immigrants or not, victims of boat accidents may be entitled to compensation for any injuries sustained aboard the vessels. While compensation in this particular case is unlikely, there are many times in which passengers aboard commercially operated vessels are injured or killed due to negligence on the boat workers’ part or because of equipment failure. Even personal water crafts, such as yachts, sail boats and jet skis can malfunction, and those onboard may also seek legal assistance for their boat accident injuries.
