Contrails in the sea

Cruises are a great vacation for the whole family. With activities and excursions to please everyone from baby to grandma, they really can be a one-size-fits-all kind of trip. After all, there are very few other destinations that have just the right amount of adventure and relaxation for everyone. Each member of your group can tailor the trip to suit their needs, without negatively impacting the experience of anyone else!

It’s a great situation and has the potential to help create memories that will last a lifetime. So, once you’ve chosen your cruise and rounded up the group, you may be thinking that it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy. And while most of the time, that is the case, there are a few rare occasions when embarking on the voyage does not mean that life gets easier.

Unfortunately, accidents aboard cruise ships happen more often than anyone would like. Just as there are risks in everyday life, there are also risks aboard cruise vessels. And as much as we would like to believe that injury is not possible while you’re on vacation, a recent event aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise reminds us that that is not always true.

On June 30th, 2016, an 8-year-old boy sustained an injury aboard Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas. The ship had left Bayonne, New Jersey that day, and was just off the coast of New York when the injury happened, reportedly in the ship’s pool.

When it was deemed that the accident required medical help, the Coast Guard was notified and the boy was medevaced from the ship. He was taken to Staten Island University Hospital North, where his condition is unknown.

In this case, it appears that the staff aboard Royal Caribbean handled the situation with the utmost care and efficiency. In an official statement, the company explained that the ship altered its course so the boy could be evacuated for medical help and that, “Royal Caribbean’s Care Team is providing support to the guest’s family.”

We are keeping the boy and his family in our thoughts during this time. It is always disappointing to have vacation plans disrupted, but health and safety truly are, and should be, the number one priority of all crewmembers and guests. So although we can imagine the sadness over missing a family vacation, we can also imagine the relief of the family members, knowing that their loved one is in good hands, getting the medical help that he needs.

An Opinion You Can Trust

Thankfully, this event is being handled in the best way possible. However, we know that this is not always the case. Often there are injuries or fatal accidents aboard ships like Royal Caribbean that are not dealt with in the proper manner.
