When you embark on a cruise ship, you are probably looking forward to the long, relaxing days spent sunbathing, sight seeing, and eating! There are so many ways to kick up your feet and have a good time. And if you are like most passengers, then this will definitely be your goal.
For many, a cruise is a chance of a lifetime! So no matter where you are headed, it is sure to be a memorable and enjoyable time. At least, that’s the plan, right? Most people do not board a cruise, expecting or hoping for the worst. And neither should you! In general, most cruise experiences go off without a hitch, so you should not have any fear before you depart.
But, being prepared and informed is always a good thing. Because sometimes, the worst does happen. A recent story out of Florida reveals just what can take place on deck.
Brawl Below Deck
In early September, a fight broke out on the Carnival Glory cruise ship as it sailed the Caribbean. Although it is not clear what started the fight, it seems that passengers did not hesitate to jump in.
Roughly six people were involved in the brawl, which involved pushing, shoving, and wrestling on the cruise floor. Video footage shows just how the violent interaction went down.
In the wake of this event, we cannot help but to wonder how this could be prevented in the future? Although cruise lines cannot control the passengers who board their ships, they do have a responsibility to keep passengers safe.
Likewise, passengers are expected to behave responsibly and appropriately during their time on the cruise. We cannot help but to wonder what could have incited such a violent exchange. But, clearly, it was enough to push quite a few people over their emotional limits.
“Passenger fights are not uncommon occurrences aboard cruise ships,” explains maritime lawyer Jason Margulies. He explains further, “Very often they are the product of too much alcohol being consumed by partying passengers and not enough security present to address out of control passengers.”
As with any event, however, this can be used as a chance to reflect and learn from the experience. Luckily, no one was seriously injured. Although egos were bruised, this event was not enough to put anyone in the hospital. And that is something to be grateful for.
The best advice is to leave a potentially escalating situation before it gets too out of control. “Unfortunately, experience has told us that there is a significant lack of adequate security aboard most cruise ships – which means that passengers would be well advised to try to identify potentially dangerous situations onboard the ship and avoid them.”
Finally, if you find yourself the victim of a passenger assault aboard a cruise – you may have recourse against the cruise line and the assailing passenger. However, you may not know how to handle your case, or may not feel comfortable navigating the tricky legal situation.
