When you step on board a cruise, you should experience a sense of relief and relaxation. Walking the halls of the ship should fill you with peace, as you go about your days enjoying the fresh sea breezes and the sunshine overhead. After all, there are few things more relaxing than having the chance to get away form the chaos of everyday life for a little while. And no vacation offers a better escape from reality than a cruise.
That is, of course, provided that nothing goes wrong. Even the slightest incident can be a reminder that a cruise is still a part of reality and must be treated as such. As much as we would prefer for cruises to be the ultimate getaway, even the best-planned trips can go awry.
Unfortunately, cruise ship rape and sexual assault happens more often than anyone would like. In an ideal world, no one would ever be violated by another person, on or off a ship. However, we are still a long way from that reality. A recent ruling, however, shows that justice can prevail, even in the worst situations.
This month, 34-year-old Costa Fascinosa crewmember Floriano Fernandes was sentenced to 10 months in jail for attempting to rape a 17-year-old girl aboard the ship while it sailed the Adriatic Sea.
Fernandes reportedly assaulted the girl in a bathroom. However, she was successfully able to fight him off and reported the sexual assault to cruise ship authorities. Unfortunately, the captain did not report the attack when the ship docked in Venice. The captain justified hiding the attempted rape of the minor passenger by stating that he assumed any “extraordinary event” he was required to report needed to be in regards to navigation or other technical issues.
Now, after three years, the crewmember in question will finally serve his court ordered jail time.
We are glad to know that, in this situation, justice has been served. Too often, we hear reports of cruise lines failing to ensure the safety and well-being of their guests. Especially considering the close-quarters that are involved in traveling on a cruise ship, responding to reports of rape and sexual assault in a timely manner is crucial to protecting any potential victims. Although the captain of the Costa Fascinosa did not do an adequate job of reporting the incident, that did not stop the courts from agreeing upon a proper punishment.
