Cruise Ship Singer Stirs Up Controversy On “The X Factor” U.K.

Cruise singer Christopher Maloney made it to the Top 5 in “The X Factor” U.K. this year, but he is now the show’s most controversial contestant. On November 25, 2012, a tabloid called the Sunday Mirror published a story in which one of his former co-workers alleged he committed cruise ship assault. The alleged victim says Maloney tried to choke her during an argument while onboard a vessel they were both working on and the story also claims Maloney, 34, was fired from a previous position at a debt collection agency in Liverpool for trying to lunge at a female manager.

Maloney has denied all the allegations, but the victim contends her side of the story was accurate. According to Janette Galbraith, 39, the incident took place on Christmas Eve 2005, when she and Maloney were both singers aboard the MSC Lirica cruise ship.

“We were the male and female lead singers in a nightly show,” Galbraith told the tabloid. “At first Christopher was lovely and we really hit it off. We shared a tiny cabin. He was unbelievably vain but I used to find it funny. He was always in the bathroom ¬plucking and preening himself. He had twice as many bottles of lotions and creams than me and he was always on the sunbed.”

However, things soon turned ugly for the singing duo and Galbraith says, “He turned into a real diva…and living with Christopher became a ¬nightmare.”

On the night of the incident, Galbraith says Maloney became violent with her after she argued with him about Maloney bringing back a companion to the cabin that she and Maloney shared.

“He’d taken whoever it was into the bathroom and they’d trashed it. We got into a row and everything came spilling out. I gave him a few home truths about what the other singers and dancers ¬really thought of him. I told him that no one liked him. Suddenly he flipped. His face totally changed. It was like he was someone else. His eyes started to burn red and he began shouting,” she said, adding that Maloney then tried to attack her.

“He lunged towards me and grabbed me around the throat. I screamed and tried to get him off. Somehow I managed to get loose and ran out of the cabin, crying. I cried for hours that night. All I wanted was to get off the ship and go home. I rang my mum Joan and told her what had happened and I also rang my boyfriend at the time back home. They were so ¬worried about me. They told me to report him,” she said.

Galbraith says she complained about Maloney’s behavior and was moved into another cabin. She eventually reported the incident to a supervisor, but says Maloney was only reprimanded. She said Maloney was only fired after he was caught violating a rule about drinking in front of passengers.

Several of Maloney’s “X Factor” U.K. co-contestants have also complained about his personality off-camera, accusing him of being two-faced and a diva. He was also caught lying about his experience as a singer.
