There are many benefits to taking a cruise vacation. One of the major perks of cruises is that they offer a relatively hassle-free way to get away. Once aboard, all you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey! There will still be off shore excursions for you to choose, but, for the most part, your time will be spent in good company, with good food and great sight seeing adventures.

At least, that’s the goal that most people have, when they decide to book their cruise. After all, who doesn’t desire a week away from the hustle and bustle of daily life?

Unfortunately, not all cruises are so hassle free. Unexpected events can happen anywhere, even while you are on your cruise. So, it’s best to be prepared before you embark. A recent tragedy in Peru reminds us of this.

On July 16th, 2016, an explosion occurred on the Aqua Expeditions cruise ship in Peru. The ship was docked in the city of Iquitos when the blast occurred, which killed one person and left many others wounded or missing.

Enapu, the state-run National Port Company, reported that a gas container exploded aboard the ship while it was refueling in port. Victims of the explosion were taken to a local hospital, while divers and navy personnel began the search for those who went missing.

At the time of this post, the cause of the explosion has not yet been reported.

Fire at Sea

Cruise ship fire is one of the most terrifying events that can happen aboard a cruise vessel. We are grateful that cruise line personnel and firefighters were on scene to rapidly extinguish the flames. However, even their quick work could not prevent fatalities, and for that, we are sorry.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those impacted by this tragic event. It is our hope that those who have been taken to the hospital will have a speedy recovery, and those who are currently missing will be found.

As much as we like to believe that cruise ships are a haven of relaxation and fun, news events such as this one remind us that we can never be too sure. Although most cruises go off without a hitch, and certainly without an explosion, we cannot overlook the times when tragedy does strike.
