US Coast Guard escorts cruise shipWhen you go on a cruise ship, there are many different aspects that you’re likely looking forward to. From the relaxing time at sea, to the fun-filled explorations on shore, we understand the various parts of the cruise experience that are sure to take your breath away. As a result of so much anticipation, you may not think about the potential for accident and injury that exists while on the water.

However, it’s important to remember that just because you are on the water does not mean that you are out of harm’s way. As a maritime law firm, we can say that the contrary is true: individuals are just as likely to encounter some unexpected event on vacation, as they are in real life. Thus, it’s necessary to make sure you are prepared.

Most of the time, it seems that cruise passengers and crewmembers are the most at-risk when it comes to being injured as the result of a cruise. However, a recent story out of Port Canaveral reminds us that innocent bystanders may also be in danger.

On Saturday, March 11th, the Carnival Magic came dangerously close to two jetskiers in Port Canaveral. The women had been using the recreational jet ski in a safe part of the port, out of the way of the cruise ship. However, one of the women fell off and when trying to get back onto the jet ski, the vehicle flipped over, sending both riders into the water. Combined with the force of the wind, the women and jet ski were pushed into the path of the oncoming cruise ship.

Luckily, Deputy Tanner Primmer, who had been escorting the Carnival Magic, saw the event and was able to help get the women out of the water, as the cruise captain adjusted the ship’s course to avoid them.

A Job Well Done

We are grateful that the authorities were nearby and able to get these young women, reportedly college students on spring break, to safety. Deputies explained that the winds and current at the time of the rescue could have pulled the women beneath the ship, leading to a very different ending.

Thankfully, no one was harmed and everyone was able to carry on with the rest of their weekend as planned. However, we know that not all stories have such a happy ending. Too often, it seems, tragedy strikes when we least expect it. And when it does, you may be left trying to pick up the pieces.
