Going on vacation should be the time when you get to leave all of your worries at home. After working so hard all year, there’s nothing better than getting to look forward to a week or two of relaxation, time with loved ones, and low stress activities.
Many people look to cruises to fulfill their vacation needs. The all-inclusive aspect of a cruise vacation takes care of your every need. From on-board entertainment to on-shore excursions, there are countless ways to enjoy yourself. And, with the plethora of cruise line options these days, you’re sure to find a cruise that is suitable for the whole family!
Whether you’re traveling with your kids, your parents, or just your friends, there is a cruise that will be right for you. Sounds ideal, right? We think so, too.
Unfortunately, as a maritime law firm, we know that this is not always the case. Although most cruises depart and return without any problems, cruise accidents and injuries can happen any time and anywhere. We’ve seen our fair share of catastrophic injuries and handled cases against many of the major cruise lines. So we know a thing or two about safety at sea.
A successful cruise vacation relies as much upon passenger preparation as it does upon cruise line responsibility. And when the two work together, you can have a really fantastic time. But, as a recent slideshow of unsettling cruise ship images reminds us, cruises can be just as unexpected as anything else in life.
Common Cruise Ship Accidents
Cruise fires are an uncommon occurrence but when they happen, they can cause cruise ship injury and death. Provided that everyone is evacuated and the flames are extinguished in a timely manner, the outcome may be bright. However, with two cruise fires this summer, in Puerto Rico and Peru, it seems that fire prevention and safety procedures aboard cruise ships are due for an overhaul.
Another all-too-common problem aboard cruise ships is crewmember negligence, arrogance, or other behavior that puts passenger lives at risk. The Costa Concordia is the perfect example of a captain whose desire to impress guests went terribly wrong, resulting in one of the worst cruise ship fatalities on record. In the aftermath of that event, we’ve handled numerous lawsuits against Costa cruise lines, helping those impacted by the disaster to move forward with their lives.
But it’s not just the captain who needs to be on good behavior. The other crewmembers and passengers should also make sound decisions, both for their own safety and for the safety of others. From drug smuggling to over-serving alcohol, to pools without lifeguards, we’ve seen numerous cases of on-board behavior that is less than exemplary.
Maintenance of the cruise ship itself is another cause of injury and death that can be avoided. We cannot help but to wonder how some cruise ships incur the damages they do, without someone noticing the disrepair before it gets out of hand. But, some things just cannot be explained. In the future, we would hope that crewmembers would take note of possible ceiling weakness and other signs of disrepair before it is too late.
“The most important thing is to take your common sense with you aboard the cruise ship,” says Board Certified Admiralty & Maritime Lawyer, Jason Margulies. “Too often cruise ship passengers are lulled into a false sense of security by the cruise lines promotion of a safe and fun environment – however, the truth is that there are a lot of hazards passengers will commonly encounter aboard a cruise ship. Everything from very slippery wet decks and marble floors, to criminals and sexual predators aboard your cruise ship where there are not enough security to adequately patrol the ship.”
