Mississippi Man Charged With Rape of a Minor Aboard Cruise

Cruise vacations accommodate many different travel interests. With the large variety of activities available onboard and the countless shore excursions options from which to choose, cruising really can please all of your nearest and dearest. However, just because the cruise lines advertise themselves as the family friendly does not mean that you can let down your guard.

Unfortunately, cruise ship rape and sexual assault are the two most commonly reported crimes at sea. In addition, more often that anyone would suspect, the victims of these crimes are minors. A recent story reminds us of the tragic reality of this situation.

This week, a 30-year-old man, Adam Christopher Boyd of Mississippi was charged in Boston with one count of sexual abuse on a minor for raping a minor aboard a cruise that had recently traveled from Boston to Bermuda.

According to reports, the rape took place while the ship was docked in Bermuda. After the event, the minor notified the cruise authorities, who contacted the Bermuda police. Boyd was arrested and will remain in Bermuda until he is extradited to the United States.

Due to the fact that this case involves a minor, there is no further information on the date of the incident or the name of the cruise where the attack took place. This is best practice for respecting the privacy of the minor involved. We send our deepest sympathy to the victim and their family, as they navigate this emotionally challenging time.

Always Report the Crime

In the wake of this event, we are glad to know that the minor took the necessary steps to prosecute the attacker. Far too many victims of rape and sexual assault remain quiet, unsure of whether or not to report the crime. We, however, urge anyone who has fallen victim to rape or sexual assault while aboard their cruise to always notify the appropriate authorities.

Having helped countless clients handle the legal burdens of their cases, we can confidently say that the road is much easier when you report the incident as soon as possible. Doing so will allow you to make the strongest case for yourself in court, ultimately leading to results with which you can be satisfied. Although no court ruling can ever undo what you have experienced, it can at least begin to help you make peace with the past and heal.
