Technical Failure on Caribbean Princess

Most people assume that once they’ve made all of these decisions, it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. And while that may be the case most of the time, there are occasions when sitting back and relaxing just are not an option.

A recent event in Ireland serves as a reminder of just how an unexpected event can affect what was (until then) the perfect cruise vacation.

Power Loss Leaves Ship Adrift

On Wednesday August 3rd, 2016, the Caribbean Princess cruise ship lost power, stranding 4,500 passengers at sea. The ship was sailing 25 miles southeast of Dublin, en route from Cobh to Dublin, when the technical failure occurred.

At the time of the event, some feared that the loss of power may be part of a terrorist attack. With so much violence in the world this summer, it is no wonder that passengers assumed the worst. However, we can safely report that this was, indeed, merely a “technical glitch” and nothing more.

Twitter posts during the outage reveal that Princess Cruises was quick to respond to concerned passengers, regarding the state of the ship. Although social media often exposes companies in the wrong, this case proves that it can just as easily be used as an efficient method of communication between passengers and cruise lines. We are glad to see Princess Cruises stood up and took ownership before the situation could get out of hand.

In fact, despite the large loss of power, the company explained that the ship still had some air conditioning, lights, and hotel services during the event. Additionally, all passengers and crew were reported to be “safe and secure.”

A tugboat and helicopter were sent by the Holyhead Coast Guard to bring the ship to shore while the technical malfunctions were fixed. And, at the time of this post, the ship is off and underway to its next port of call.
