Utah Man Will Not Face Death Penalty for Killing Wife Aboard Cruise

In July of this year, the Emerald Princess made headlines as a murder site, when Utah man Kenneth Manzanares attacked his wife Kristy in their stateroom while the ship was off the coast of Alaska. Since then, very little has been released about the case, despite reports of attorneys citing “voluminous” amounts of discovery that have included eyewitness statements as well as medical examiner and toxicology reports.

In the latest update on the case, the U.S. attorney’s office has decided that it will not seek the death penalty in this case. Mr. Manzanares has pled not guilty. A jury trial is scheduled to begin on April 23rd, 2018.

In light of this new update, we are led to wonder why the decision was made as it was. Although Alaska does not have capital punishment, since the crime occurred in U.S. waters, and not in State territorial waters, pursuing that option was possible. Nonetheless, are main desire of course is that justice be served for the sake of Mrs. Manzanares’ grieving family.

It is our firm belief that regardless of whether a crime is committed on land or at sea, its investigation and the ultimate punishment of the perpetrator should not differ based solely on where the crime is committed needs be treated with as much seriousness as one committed on land. No family should have to deal with the emotional strife of a loved one’s death, especially while on what should have been a fun and relaxing cruise vacation.
