Hotels and resorts are enjoyable places to visit, but they can sometimes be dangerous. In our fifty years of practice as a firm, we have literally seen it all, from slips and trips, to bed bug infestations, to wrongful deaths and sexual assaults. No matter the incident, the applicable law is generally similar. That is, if a hotel owner is negligent or fails to use reasonable care and that results in an accident or a death, then the owner can be held responsible in a court of competent jurisdiction. If you have been the victim of an InterContinental Hotel Group accident, contact an attorney for advice.

Child Drowning Accident at Holiday Inn in Strongsville, Ohio
In July 2020, an eight-year-old boy with special needs drowned in a Holiday Inn pool in Strongsville, Ohio. The boy was missing for nine hours, during which the pool was reportedly checked at least three times, yet he was not discovered at the bottom of the pool. Witnesses described the pool as murky and cloudy, and the hotel had a history of violations during health inspections. We have successfully handled numerous drowning cases and we fought tirelessly to force cruise ships to place lifeguards on cruise ships. As such, in our view, a tragedy like this was clearly preventable and the hotel can and should be held responsible for the boy’s untimely death.
Near-Drowning Accident at Holiday Inn Express in Livonia, Michigan
In February 2020, a two-year-old boy nearly died in Livonia, Michigan, after a horrifying incident at a Holiday Inn Express hotel that was caught on video. The boy was recorded on surveillance video at the hotel’s indoor pool flailing in the water and then sinking to the bottom of the pool. A 9-year-old girl discovered the boy unresponsive and got the help of a nearby adult, who dove into the pool and rescued the child. Two off-duty nurses at the hotel performed CPR repeatedly to succeed in finally resuscitating the lucky toddler, who was taken to a hospital, was treated, and released. Again, our unique and extensive experience in handling cases of this nature afford us the best opportunity to hold a hotel accountable where there is negligence that played a role in the incident.
Sexual Assault at Holiday Inn in Fraser, Colorado
In July 2020, a guest of the Holiday Inn in Fraser, Colorado accused a 22-year-old employee of the hotel of sexual assault. The employee allegedly forced his way into the guest’s hotel room while delivering towels. He then sexually assaulted and choked the guest in an attack lasting about 30 minutes. The employee had appeared visibly intoxicated on the night in question, and police found evidence that he had accessed the hotel’s reservation system to search for the guest’s information. As a firm, we have successfully handled hundreds of rape and sexual assaults cases against hotels and cruise line, so this horrible story is one we have heard far too often. In our experience, lax (or no) background checks by hotel owners almost invariably leads to disastrous consequences like this.
