College Student Falls Twenty Stories Off Pony Wall At Hotel RIU in Mexico
According to 12 News, “ just hours after arriving in Cabo San Lucas, 18-year-old Aiden Nevarez fell to his death at the hotel he and several of his classmates were staying at.” Nevarez fell off of a short “pony wall” where the crowns of palm trees resembled a row of short bushes that obscured the fact that there was a 20-foot drop on the other side.
They described the area of the Hotel Riu Santa Fe where the accident happened as a short, pony wall. On the other side, the tops of palm trees resembled short bushes, disguising the 20-foot drop-off. In a case like this, the issue lies with the fact that RIU management and staff should have recognized how much of a safety risk a short wall is next to such a steep drop — especially when the wall appears to be next to level ground due to the illusion that the tops of these mature palm trees created.
RIU Reggae Explosion Leaves One Dead And Four Injured in Jamaica
In April of 2017, one employee was killed, and four others were critically injured following a blast in the boiler room at RIU Reggae, RIU’s location in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Hotel workers deserve the same protections that guests are (typically) afforded, but in situations such as this deadly boiler failure, employees are putting their lives on the line to keep the business operating.
Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman, P.A. has a long history of defending workers’ rights for compensation under the Jones Act (a maritime protective act that is similar to land-based workers’ compensation) and is prepared to take the fight to the major corporations and chains that must be held accountable for their own failings in keeping their workers and their guests safe from harm — or in this case, from fatal injuries.
Tourist Dies After Being Restrained By RIU Hotel Security Guards
After being restrained by several security guards following a fight at a 24-hour sports bar on the RIU Cancun property, guest Dean Wright was declared dead. According to a statement by his family, “…sometime between 7 and 8 am Dean was seen unconscious (and confirmed to be dead) on a luggage trolley in the corridor beside the lifts surrounded by security guards,” but the family struggled to gather additional details about the situation and how it came to pass that Dean was killed.
Adequate security is essential for keeping guests safe at hotels. Part of proper training as a security guard is knowing how to safely restrain an individual for their safety and the safety of those around them. Wright, 33, was involved in a fight with a group of American tourists at the sports bar in Hotel RIU Cancun, and six security guards were involved in restraining him in the moments that led up to his death.
In a situation like this, working with an experienced personal injury attorney who can bring all of the facts to light about the case is essential. Wright’s family was left struggling to try to piece together the details of this situation, and matters like a lack of security cameras or other safety measures that can help either reduce the risk of a fight OR provide important evidence of the situation are important in this case.
