Texas Woman Drowns at Sandals Resort in Turks and Caicos
In July of 2019, at the Sandals Resort on Turks and Caicos Islands, Diane Hendricks was with her son, grandchildren, and daughter-in-law on a resort-led snorkeling trip in open water when the woman began to struggle in the water. Her daughter-in-law helped her back to the boat, where Hendricks continued to struggle, and according to the family, the staff on the boat refused to help. In addition to their refusal to help in this dire situation, there was a lack of life-saving equipment on the boat that could have helped. Hendricks was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
According to the family, this death could have been avoided at a few different points, including proper training and response by the staff on the snorkeling excursion and life-saving equipment on the boat. Guests on these trips have every right to expect that they are in a safe environment with trained staff.
Man Dies After Being Sucked Into Hot Tub At Sandals Resort in Jamaica
In December 2010, John Van Hoy Jr., a 33-year-old from Liberty, MO, was killed when he became trapped by a drain at the bottom of an inground hot tub at Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort in Nassau, Jamaica. Van Hoy’s fiancee began to shout for help but claims that hotel staff walked away instead of responding appropriately.
According to the family, Van Hoy was an extremely athletic individual but was still unable to free himself from the suction. His fiancee jumped into the tub to help free him, but during this time, staff neither helped nor turned off the pumps, both of which could have led to a much different outcome. The victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital after waiting 45 minutes for an ambulance. According to Van Hoy’s fiancee, she was interrogated by staff to have her concede fault to avoid a lawsuit.
In this situation, there are several issues present, including a significant product liability case, negligence, and intense emotional distress.
